Boat Test: 2024 Bayliner Trophy T23 Pilothouse https://www.boatingmag.com/boats/2024-bayliner-trophy-t23-pilothouse-boat-test/ Thu, 21 Mar 2024 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.boatingmag.com/?p=87807 The new Bayliner Trophy T23 Pilothouse gives anglers a boat capable of extending their season on both ends.

Overview

The mission of Bayliner Trophy models has always been to give owners a capable boat at a reasonable price. That has never changed, and to prove it, Bayliner has debuted a Portuguese-built pilothouse design featuring a comfortable and dry ride even if sea conditions prove less than clement. It’s one of the five new cabin models in the Pilothouse and Explorer lines.

While pilothouse boats are common in the Northeast and Northwest US, this 23-footer would also be ideal in places such as the Great Lakes and large bodies of water in the Midwest. During my sea trial on a frosty Florida morning, I realized that the benefits of this design were not limited to Northern climes.

The helm can be accessed via a sliding door. Courtesy Bayliner

Interior and Accessories

The two Trophy Pilothouse models, which also include the T25 PH, are more fishing-forward than the three Explorer cabin-cruiser models, which are purpose-built more for cruising and entertaining. The most visible difference between the two lines is that the Pilothouse models have glare-reducing windshields that angle past vertical like the windows of an air traffic control tower, which gives them a rugged, mini-tugboat appearance compared with the Explorers, which have aft-raked windshields that lend them a sleek appearance. Both sport nearly vertical bows, which further cements their European lineage.

Our T23 PH test boat featured the Fish Package ($2,312), which includes port and starboard 30-gallon in-deck fish boxes, each with a pump for quick draining. Also included are toe rails, a raw-water washdown, a pair of extra rod holders, and a transom fish station with a smallish 10-gallon livewell. Thanks to the pair of flip-down bench seats in the cockpit, there’s plenty of room to move about when it’s time to fish. The bench to starboard is a $2,693 option that also comes with a table for expanding the T23 PH’s entertainment quotient. The minimum 27 inches of gunwale height in the cockpit allows anglers to lock in safely during a fight. Boarding from either side is easy thanks to the pair of standard swim-platform extensions with port and starboard transom walk-throughs leading to the cockpit.

Bayliner Trophy T23 Pilothouse galley
Food prep is easy inside the pilothouse enclosure. Courtesy Bayliner

The sturdy hardtop provides an excellent anchor point for the pilothouse enclosure and grants 6 feet, 6 inches of headroom. This is similar to Jeanneau’s 24-foot-11-inch NC 695 Sport Series 2 ($95,000 base boat plus pre-rig, with a 150 hp Yamaha engine). Up top are four standard rocket-launcher rod holders and a rack for securing items such as paddleboards. The bridge deck can be fully enclosed thanks to the rear sliding glass door and side windows conjoined to the top. There are two more sliding glass doors on either side for ventilation and access to the twin passageways around the enclosure. Above, there’s a slidable hatch to let a little of the outside in. One nitpick is that the tall windshield could use a couple of vents to allow more direct airflow on hot days. Access around the cabin is minimal to create maximum indoor space, and despite having a cabin, you can walk all the way forward to attend to anchor duties. An electric anchor windlass is an option ($2,511).

Because of space allocation, the cabin is tiny and barely accommodated my 5-foot-10-inch frame when laying beam-wise, but kids will love its fortlike vibe. Taller owners might consider opting for the T25 PH model, which has a far roomier cabin, but the downside might be the 9-foot-6-inch beam, which might require wide-load towing permits. Our boat came equipped with the Cabin Comfort Package ($3,883), which included berth filler cushions, curtains, a sea toilet, a cabin door, a flip-down jump seat and a front-porch light. Adding an optional refrigerator will cost an extra $1,435.

Engine

Owners can choose a 175 hp or 225 hp Mercury FourStroke outboard. These share the same 3.4L V-6 powerhead. The upcharge for the additional 50 ponies is $3,220. With the max power option, our test boat planed in 3.8 seconds and accelerated to 30 mph in 8.2 seconds, even with five well-fed Americans on board. Top speed? 42.2 mph. Superb visibility comes from the tall windshield with a standard starboard-side windshield wiper. I felt most comfortable standing because of the throttle position: It’s mounted on a pedestal on the dash instead of being the usual side-mounted binnacle, made impossible due to the glass sides.

The T23 PH proves easy to operate thanks to standard features such as Active Trim, which automatically sets the boat’s running attitude. Its happiest cruise speed? Around 30 mph, with the engine running at 4,500 rpm and burning 10.3 gallons per hour. At this speed, the inclinometer showed that it was running at 5 degrees bow-up, which inspired a confidence that it was resistant to wave stuffing and, along with being enclosed, added to the feeling that I was driving a bigger boat than its 23-foot-7-inch length would indicate. Its moderate 17 degrees of deadrise meant that when cranked over in a hard turn, it heeled over, but not to extremes.

With the T23 PH, fishing couples can cruise to their favorite fishing spot, throw out the anchor, watch the sunset, retire, then wake up at dawn in position for the morning bite.

How We Tested

  • Engine: Mercury 225
  • Drive/Prop: Outboard/Mercury Enertia 16″x17″ 3-blade stainless-steel
  • Gear Ratio: 1.85:1 Fuel Load: 45 gal. Crew Weight: 950 lb.

High Points

  • A four-speaker Fusion stereo comes standard.
  • The tall transom makes a great place to lean against while fighting a fish in rough water.
  • The bridge-deck sliding doors have large bolts that keep them securely open or shut as needed.

Low Points

  • The flip-down cockpit bench seats have overly large metal grab handles that protrude into the cockpit, creating bumping hazards.
  • The livewell lid could use friction hinges or a dam to keep it partially open when grabbing a bait.
  • A trim-tab option would help level the ride when the human payload is unevenly balanced.

Boat Test: 2023 Bayliner M19 https://www.boatingmag.com/boats/2023-bayliner-m19-boat-test/ Wed, 15 Feb 2023 18:05:00 +0000 https://www.boatingmag.com/?p=83091 The M19 offers a stable ride and is easy to tow and stow.

Overview

The Element M19’s ride is stable, its handling and layout are passenger-friendly, the boat is easy to tow and stow, and it proves inexpensive to purchase and is miserly on fuel. This new flagship of the Element series doesn’t deviate significantly from the path of encouraging new boaters. It does expand the M line, replacing the long-running E18 while introducing updated looks and seating.

The M hull pairs the benefits of a center V with twin sponsons port and starboard. The result is minimal bow rise and a relatively flat cornering style that won’t unnerve newcomers. A minimal 1-foot-5-inch draft also proves practical and easy.

Interior and Accessories

Carrying its beam well forward, the topside amenities include a spacious bow cockpit, allowing two to stretch out or a crew of five to gather around an optional table. A center bow cushion and backrest can also create a rear-facing seat. Rather than the Element’s trademark bench to accommodate the captain and crew at the helm, the M19 debuts a helm seat with a flip-up bolster. Opposite, a companion seat molds into the deck and features a removable backrest. Drop the filler cushion in the footwell between the seat and console to create additional bench seating. Likewise, insert a filler aft and link the seat to the rear lounge.

Bayliner M19 bow seating
The bow allows two to stretch out or a crew of five to gather around an optional table. Courtesy Bayliner

The M19 also introduces a convertible aft lounge. Slide the movable backrests of the port and starboard sun pads fore or aft to change the focus from seating split 50-50 between the cockpit and swim platform to forward- or aft-facing lounges. Still in prototype at the time of our test, the backrest features a topside handle that allows seatbacks to reposition into any of four mounting slots. Add a central filler to the walkway and fashion a wide sun pad or recliner.

Engine

Our test boat featured only a 115 hp Mercury outboard but still topped out near 40 mph. The hull jumped onto plane in 3.6 seconds, and passed the 30 mph mark in 7.1 seconds. Equally important to the target ownership will be fuel efficiency. We found the cruising sweet spot at 3,500 rpm, where the Element ran comfortably atop the water at 21.5 mph while burning a minimal 3 gph.

Bayliner M19 on the trailer

How We Tested

  • Engine: Mercury 115
  • Drive/Prop: Outboard/Mercury 14.29″ x 23″ 4-blade stainless steel
  • Gear Ratio: 2.07:1 Fuel Load: 18 gal. Crew Weight: 340 lb.

High Points

  • Standard folding tongue trailer, ski pylon and stainless-steel boarding ladder.
  • Available fishing package comes with a livewell and bow trolling motor.
  • A 6-foot-long ski locker with a big hatch swallows boards and bulky gear.
  • Choose a wraparound windshield with a walk-through, and helm-only or helm and port console windscreens.

Low Points

  • Steering wheel is plastic but feels solid.
  • Handle with care; exposed fastener hardware protrudes below hatch lids.
  • Seat padding is comfortable but minimal in thickness.

Toughest Competitor

Starcraft’s 191 OB ($42,943 with a Mercury 115 ELPT) gains bow space from a squared-off design that retains a generous bow platform. Opposite the helm, a small galley incorporates a forward-facing backrest for bow seating and an aft-facing backrest for the cockpit. A bench spans the transom width, broken up by a starboard walk-through.

At a time when many new boaters are entering the ranks of those who enjoy the world’s best outdoor activity, its pleasing to see new boats that are affordable for a wide swath of the public.

“Inclusive” is the word that Bayliner uses–as do other boatbuilders-to identify boats priced below that level of many others in the market. A lower price includes more potential buyers.

If it gets more people out on the water, experiencing boating and boat ownership, we are all for it.

Overview

The Bayliner T24CC we tested was well-equipped for less than $80,000. Its 23-degree-deadrise hull cut through Charlotte Harbor’s wind-driven 2-foot chop and stood up to the thrashing it dished out. The firmly mounted fiberglass T-top, one of the most prominent options on the boat, shaded us nicely without shuddering under the turbulence. Its fishing cockpit was wide, deep and roomy, and the bow area featured plenty of fishing space, with removable seating cushions for day tripping.

Bayliner Trophy T24CC helm
There is room for dual Simrad 12-inch displays, and a more economical option of single or dual 9-inch displays. Courtesy Bayliner Boats

Interior and Accessories

The list of standards on the T24CC was long, including a canvas T-top with rod holders, a raw-water washdown, dual batteries with switch, a stereo and more. Options such as a freshwater washdown in the cockpit and on the transom and upgraded horsepower are reasonably priced.

You can upgrade the 225 with manual controls to a 300 hp digital motor for $12,125, or get a midrange upgrade to the manual 250 for just $3,600. Power steering is $860.

The features on this boat are impressive, and the T24CC held up well under deeper scrutiny.

In the fishing cockpit, we had a standard 15-gallon livewell with an acrylic lid. We tossed in several dozen shrimp and a few pinfish to try our luck in the harbor. While the fish were not cooperating, the boat did. We drifted the baits across a man-made structure called Alligator Reef, which shows on the harbor map about 7 miles south of the Ponce De Leon Park launch ramp. When the shrimp did little for us, we switched to plugs and jigs, and trolled them along the reef line. The deep-V hull held its ground in the sharp crosswind; had the tides been rising or falling instead of slack, the cockpit would’ve provided a perfect place to carry on the battle. The T24CC has deep gunwales and a non-skid deck for good footing. A transom seat can be stowed while still offering padding for the thighs in a tough fight. Two rod holders in each gunwale and four shotgun rod holders keep rods secure and in action. The T-top adds four holders to keep extras ready should they be needed. Two fish boxes lay along the deck to port and starboard, and the large insulated boxes are ideal for handling big fish and keeping them fresh on ice.

At the bow, stow the seating cushions and deep-drop to the reef. Two rod holders assist in rigging. You can stand on the cockpit sole in rougher water or get up on the nonskid seating bulkheads for a higher angle. Below the bulkheads, stow life jackets or other gear. In the center of the deck, there’s a deep locker for storage or fish.

The hull design is one Bayliner once called “cab forward,” which stretches the beam forward farther than most center-consoles and accommodates the broader-than-normal seating arrangements. While the bow area is wider, the bottom stem is still sharp to cleave waves and make the ride comfortable, even in choppy seas.

If you plan to bottomfish, add at least the bow anchor roller for a nominal fee or the windlass at less than $2,000. There’s an optional cocktail table to convert the area to a picnic area.

Beneath the center console, a roomy compartment can be equipped with a head and also used as a changing room—two essential options for family fun.

Engine

The power-steering option is worthwhile for any power configuration, and I would choose it. The digital throttle and shift, only available with the 300 hp motor, is worth it for the upgrade of the motor alone. At the helm, there is room for dual Simrad 12-inch displays, and a more economical option of single or dual 9-inch displays. Sonar, GPS, embedded charting and more are standard with the Simrad systems.

The Sea Chaser 24 HFC is comparably sized but comes in at a substantially higher price. Typically powered with dual engines, it’s maximum horsepower is 350, and it is built with a portside boarding door that some boaters love and others never find cause to open. According to Sea Chaser’s website, it comes standard with premium manual Teleflex throttle and shift control cables rather than digital controls, which, as in the T24CC, are optional, depending on motor selection.

The T24CC has a base price less than $65,000 with a strong standard features list. At just $80,000, the equipment list expands considerably, and the horsepower boosts to 300 with digital controls. Is the T24CC a good buy? After our test, we decided it was not only a lot of boat for the money, but also a boat that made one ask, “Why should I spend more?”

Overview

The evolution of Bayliner’s Element Series continues with the introduction of the M15, a new entry-level deck boat that features a more open cockpit design and upgraded upholstery, with a starting price below $14,000 including a trailer. Despite being a foot shorter and nearly a foot narrower than the E16—the original Element—the M15 feels larger because it does away with the space-eating rear playpen and fiberglass dividers between seating areas. Moving the helm seat to the aft bench also creates more usable space in the cockpit. A major evolution is the integrated swim platform, which gives the boat a more graceful sheerline and creates a one-level back porch that’s perfect for key-off lounging facing rearward. Bring on that sunset!

Engine

The standard engine is a three-cylinder Mercury FourStroke 40 EFI, but upgrading to the four-cylinder Mercury FourStroke 50 EFI we ran during our test is a recommended option ($775) that pushed its top speed to a respectable 31.3 mph. The M15′s M-hull gives it admirable side-to-side stability, with 17 degrees of deadrise at the stern to help mitigate the chop. The hull also provides lots of lift, which helped it get on plane in 5.7 seconds and also allowed it to stay on plane at only 14.5 mph. The angular outer sponsons push back during hard turns to reduce inward lean.

Interior and Accessories

The few available options are bundled to make choosing a setup easy. Buyers could select the bare-bones E Package, but they should fork over an extra $1,050 to upgrade to the EX Package, which includes the choice of black or red hull color, a Jensen 120-watt AM/FM MP3 stereo, a 500 gph bilge pump, a mooring cover, and a Bimini top with boot. For another $525, the EXL Package builds on the EX Package by adding SeaDek padding to the cockpit sole and swim platform, a digital depth finder, and a bow filler cushion to create a sunning platform.

Bayliner Boats’ newest entry-level model accomplishes the mission of delivering great value and fun in an easily trailerable package.
