Overview

Scout has been building quality fishing boats since 1989. Replacing the popular 355 LXF, the new 357 LXF center-console is part of the nine-boat lineup of luxury-cruisers aimed squarely at the higher-end slice of the outboard offshore-fishing market, appealing to buyers who want a performance-flavored, ultra-finished, luxury approach in their new center-console fishing conveyance.

Engines

The 357 fires a magnum bullet with triple 400 Mercury Verado outboard power. With these, we spun multiple 72.2 mph top-end speed runs in rough, windblown channel chop. The V-10s pulled 6,400 rpm swinging 27-pitch stainless-steel four-blade Mercury Revolution X SS propellers through 2.08-to-1 gear ratios. While acceleration won’t scare any quick PWC or little single-engine hot-rod hulls, it was plenty zippy considering the 35-by-11-foot size and 14,000-pound heft. With 180 gallons in the 319-gallon tank, we hit 30 mph in 7.4 seconds from dead in-gear idle. Fuel-sippers who dislike dawdling will like the efficient cruise speed we noted. At 4,000 rpm, the 22-degree-deadrise stepped Scout V-bottom was reaching 1.15 miles per gallon—and so netting more than 390 miles of range while leaving 10 percent in reserve. A long weekend of cruising, fishing and island-hopping without refueling is easily in the cards.

The expansive helm is nicely appointed. Courtesy Scout Boats

In many cases, a fast hull trades comfort for speed and punch. Not the 357 LXF. Its deep-V double-stepped hull offers a crisp, smooth and stable ride. Turns are predictable; it takes room to slow this beast, but the hull cuts and banks as it arcs around in tight hard-over turns. Planing shows pronounced bow rise as that elongated nose breaks over, then the hull flattens out and scoots. The resin-infused fiberglass hull features a pad bottom with multiple lifting strakes and a set-back transom, all of which translates into enhanced performance and efficiency.

Each 357 LXF is built alongside Scout’s other models ranging from 17 to 53 feet, with its newest flagship 67-footer set to debut sometime this season. Scout’s Summerville, South Carolina, plant is most impressive, employing over 400 workers and seemingly under constant expansion. Each Scout is designed, prototyped, tested and built right there in the plant. Even the electrical harnesses, plumbing and fixtures are built in-house. We spent some time there observing the processes in the prototype stage, the electrical assembly clean room, the gelcoat and layup stage, and the final assembly line. With the exception of the computer-aided prototyping and calculations, it’s done by hand. The epoxy-infused layup is as efficient as it gets, tossing aside the age-old adage that an offshore boat must be laid up heavy to last and offer a smooth ride.

Interior and Accessories

Posh forward seating includes a lounger for two on the forward console as well as wraparound seating/loungers in the bow, with an electrically actuated bow table that can retract flush with the seats to accommodate an upholstered filler cushion to create a spacious sun lounger.

The cockpit layout offers a center-mounted helm, triple heated helm seating with flip-up bolsters behind a fully integrated pilot’s console surrounded by a custom Scout-designed and -built T-top with full safety-glass enclosure. Helm controls feature a Fusion Bluetooth amplified eight-speaker sound system, Garmin 8612 display, lighted electronically controlled switching, compass, USB ports, and courtesy lighting. Rear-facing aft cooler bench passenger seating rounds out the console. An optional electric telescoping sunshade is a techie touch that makes sun-scorched days easier on the skin; add optional air conditioning for ultimate comfort. A hardtop solar-panel trickle charger, an additional charger and batteries keep all the accessories humming. A Seakeeper 3 option is a great choice for rougher seas.

Scout 357 LXF head

Belowdecks, the overnight cabin features a double berth, marine head with electric pump, Corian counter surfaces, sink, refrigerator, port and starboard windows, a 19-inch built-in flat-screen TV, a removable teak cabin table, and multiple storage cubbies.

In the bow, an electrically actuated bow table/sun lounge rises from an Esthec deck for casual gatherings. An anchor camera is standard, making mooring easier from the cockpit, and an aft-facing bench seat converts into a raised prep table. Grigio bow-cushion upholstery is available, along with other color options.

For anglers, the 60-gallon transom fish/storage box, port and starboard 43-gallon in-floor fish boxes, and a 47-gallon cockpit baitwell are all standard, as are 10 gunwale-mounted stainless-steel rod holders. Options include retractable hardtop rocket launchers, electric-reel plugs, underwater lights, and hardtop-mounted outriggers.

Fountain’s 34CC, powered with triple 400 Verados, comes in at a base price of $586,150 before options. It’s a 76 mph runner with a 519-mile range at cruising speed.

Scout has honed its LXF lineup over many years. This latest 357 LXF takes its rightful place as a premier 35-foot fisher, with style and comfort and performance.

For most of us, spending time enjoying watersports on your family boat is a rite of passage. Most boaters at some point enjoy skiing, wakeboarding, tubing or even surfing behind the transom. Thankfully, you can enjoy these sports behind boats that aren’t specific to the task. In the last few decades, multipurpose family boats have come a long way in the towing game with multiple features that enhance watersports, such as solid tow pylons, wakeboard towers, GPS speedometers, speed control, ballast for wakeboarding and wakesurfing, specialized sterndrives, and wake-shaping devices for wakesurfing. The sterns are designed with swim platforms for ease of putting on skis or a board and making it convenient to get in and out of the water.

These features are in boats with various propulsion types, including outboard, jet, sterndrives, and forward-facing sterndrives that place the propeller on the front of the lower unit so you can wakesurf behind a family boat with greater safety.

Here are six great family-oriented tow boats for 2023.

Regal LS2 Surf wakesurfing a lake
The Regal LS2 Surf is an excellent boat for wakesurfing and other various tow sports. Courtesy Regal

Regal LS2 Surf

The Regal LS2 Surf combines runabout performance and features with tow-sports versatility. The LS2 Surf is based on the LS2 ($95,755 with a conventional 280 hp DP drive). It features a Volvo Penta Forward Drive, which is safer for wakesurfing and great for tubing, wakeboarding, water-skiing, kneeboarding and barefoot water-skiing.

Regal includes a variety of features to enhance the tow-sports experience. The helm features two 7-inch touchscreen displays that provide information such as GPS speed and water depth. The driver can set the acceleration, desired speed and wake characteristics for each individual rider. Steering and throttle movement prove smooth and easy, providing a better tow-sports experience for the driver and the person in tow.

For wakeboarding and wakesurfing, the LS2 allows up to 1,800 pounds of ballast, strategically positioned below the deck, with two ballast bladders located at the stern and one amidships. This allows the hull to ride deeper to create a bigger wake. Surf plates mounted at the transom adjust electronically from the helm to shape the perfect surf wave.

The higher tow point of the LS2 wakeboard tower gives boarders more air time but makes starting on a ski or board easier for beginners. A second tow point with a pop-up pylon at the stern will work well for towing tubers.

Because the engine is located below the deck, passengers have easy access to the swim platform and the water. The soft synthetic material on the platform is ideal because it keeps the bottom of a board or a ski from scratching while offering a comfortable, secure surface for wet feet.

Add a tow-sports mirror and you have an excellent boat for wakesurfing and other various tow sports.

Four Winns H2 OB

The Four Winns H2 OB accommodates tubing, water-skiing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding and barefoot water-skiing. If you want to wakesurf, Four Winns also offers the H2 Surf model with a ballast system,  powered by a Volvo Penta Forward Drive (starting at $121,130).

Four Winns provides options for the tow point, including a removable pylon that raises the towline above the outboard. Two wakeboard tower options are also offered. The base tower folds by gas assist, and the upgrade folds electronically.

The backrest of the port helm seat adjusts to face aft for the designated tow-sports spotter. Many outboard swim platforms offer limited use. However, Four Winns cleverly designed a swim platform that extends farther aft to provide plenty of space to put on a ski or a board. The swim platform offers an optional synthetic material on the platform, also ideal for putting on your ski or board.

Power comes from either a Mercury outboard from 200 to 250 hp or a Yamaha from 150 to 200 hp for ample acceleration and top-end speed. Trimmed down, it creates a small, smooth wake ideal for slalom-skiing and barefoot water-skiing. The H2 OB comes with fly-by-wire throttle and hydraulic steering to make throttle and steering smooth and easy for the driver. These features help the driver provide a smoother, consistent pull for the skier or rider behind the boat. The dash sports a touchscreen that provides information such as GPS speed and water depth. To design a perfect outboard-powered tow-sports boat, just add an aftermarket mirror to give the driver visual awareness of the person in tow.

Chaparral 23 SSi

Powered with either a Volvo Penta or a MerCruiser sterndrive, this 23-foot boat includes a variety of tow-sports features as standard or optional. Chaparral includes a tow eye mounted on the transom, with an optional wakeboard tower with a swivel tow point. The swivel tow point helps keep the line from fraying. Board racks are available for the tower also.

Sterndrive power allows for a spacious swim platform on the 23 SSi; however, Chaparral smartly includes an add-on section to extend the swim platform aft by an additional 25 inches as an option. An optional synthetic surface along with the ample space make putting on a wakeboard or a ski easy.

The helm features a touchscreen that provides GPS, water depth and other features. The digital throttle control and optional power steering both enhance the tow-sports driving experience for the driver and the person in tow.

Chaparral also offers the 23 Surf, which features a Volvo Penta or a MerCruiser forward-facing sterndrive ($93,895 nationally advertised price). The Malibu Surf Gate system is a paddlelike device located at the transom of the 23 Surf that converts the wake into a wave for wakesurfing by redirecting water flow past the stern of the boat. The Surf Gate is controlled electronically from the helm, allowing the surfer to transfer from one side of the wake to the other without stopping the boat.

The 23 Surf also features a ballast bladder that stows in the midship ski locker to increase the size of the wake for wakeboarding and wakesurfing.

The 23 SSi and the 23 Surf are perfect choices for those who want more from their boat than just cruising.

Yamaha 222XD

The 2023 Yamaha 222XD is ideal for families who love the handling characteristics of a sport jet boat but also want to have fun behind the boat. Yamaha designed the 222XD with multiple tow-sports features, including a wakeboard tower with board racks. The solid, raised tow point makes starts on a ski or a wakeboard easier and allows wakeboard riders to get more air time.

For the wakeboarder and surfer, Yamaha includes ballast bladders in belowdecks storage compartments to increase the size of the wake. The Wakebooster is a Yamaha feature that attaches quickly and easily to the transom of the boat to redirect the flow of water past the stern of the boat to convert the wake into a wave for wakesurfers.

Yamaha features a synthetic deck surface that covers the swim platform. This provides added traction when walking with wet feet, and the soft surface protects the bottom of the board or ski from scratches when putting on bindings. The swim platform rides low to the water, making getting in and out easier.

The 222XD includes multiple high-end features to enhance driving for tow sports. The boat boasts a wide-angle PTM mirror on the windshield, giving the driver improved visual awareness around the boat.

The 12.3-inch Connext touchscreen offers a menu of critical information, such as water depth and GPS speed. With a touch of the Connext screen, the driver can program acceleration, target speed and wake shape to accommodate various levels of rider or surfer experience. These settings can be saved for each individual.

The 222XD features fly-by-wire throttle for easy shifting, ensuring the person in tow a smooth pull-out when starting. Steering is designed to be easy and precise. Controls on the steering wheel allow the driver to maneuver the boat at slow speeds without relying on the throttle.

The new Yamaha 222XD is an excellent choice for families who love tow sports and the agility of a sport jet.

Scout 195 Sport Dorado

The Scout 195 Sport Dorado is ideal for towing tubers, water-skiers, wakeboarders and barefoot water-skiers. The smaller size (19 1/2 feet in length) makes it maneuverable when pulling someone up or getting back to a fallen skier or rider. A swim step on the portside transom eases getting in and out of the water, and the co-pilot seat swivels aft to ensure a seat for spotting.

Known for quality design and construction, Scout doesn’t skimp on the Sport Dorado’s powder-coated tow point. As an option, it features a sturdy ski tow that arches over the outboard and attaches to the transom and deck at four points.

The 195 comes standard with a Yamaha 115 hp outboard, with an optional 150 hp offered ($54,121). However, the extra power of the 150 hp outboard makes sense for tow-sports use, especially to provide better acceleration for adults getting up on a slalom ski.

Fly-by-wire throttle and hydraulic steering provide a smooth experience for the driver and person in tow. The 195 Sport Dorado is equipped with a 9-inch Garmin display showing GPS speed and water depth, important information for the tow-sports captain.

The moderate 19-degree deadrise, combined with trimming the outboard down, results in a small, easy-to-cross wake for slalom-skiers and barefooters. Just add an aftermarket tow-sports mirror to have a fun family tow-sports boat.

Avalon Waketoon

Avalon has proven you can combine pontoon and wakesurfing in the same sentence with its Waketoon, a pontoon designed specifically for wakesurfing and tow sports. The first pontoon with a specialized sterndrive, this 23-foot tri-toon comes standard with a 350 hp MerCruiser 6.2L Bravo Four S forward-facing sterndrive, enabling safer wakesurfing.

The Waketoon’s 4,200 pounds of dry weight creates a wake sufficient to allow two to surf simultaneously, one on each side of the wake. Two hydraulic wake plates at the transom adjust electronically from the helm to fine-tune the wake or convert from wake to wave when wakesurfing.

Avalon includes a wakeboard tower with a Bimini top and optional wakeboard racks. The large in-floor ski locker accommodates skis and boards easily.

In addition to the high tow point for wakeboarding, Avalon offers an optional stern pylon for towing tubers. The roomy swim platform features a soft synthetic surface, making it an ideal space for putting on a board or a ski.

The Waketoon features a plush, comfortable helm seat. The digital throttle-and-shift provides precise acceleration. The dash features a sophisticated design that includes GPS speed and a touchscreen information center. A rearview camera lets the driver monitor the action behind the boat. Where required, simply add an aftermarket tow-sports mirror specifically designed for pontoons and you have an awesome tow-sports machine.

Avalon intelligently redesigned the pontoon by combining features for wakesurfing and tow sports with a modern aesthetic. The Waketoon is clearly not your grandparents’ pontoon.

Scout’s new 281 XSS hybrid bay boat reflects a superb combination of bluewater angling chops and inshore fishing prowess. But that’s just the beginning. Its advanced epoxy-infused carbon fiber and E-glass construction throughout (including the hardtop super-structure that encloses the helm area) minimizes weight, ensures long-term durability and maximizes performance. When powered by a Mercury Racing 450R outboard, this sleek and stylish model with a double-step hull rockets to a top speed of nearly 63 mph.

Under the aft casting deck of Scout’s flagship bay boat is a pair of voluminous fish boxes that can be optionally plumbed as livewells, dedicated fender storage and a fold-out bench seat. Lift the seat to access the bilge rigging and stowage for two 5-gallon buckets. You’ll find tackle -drawers within the side steps.

A cavernous storage locker and battery compartment resides under the elevated bow deck. An anchor windlass and in-stem anchor roller lie concealed under the bow hatch.

An 18-gallon livewell is integrated into the leaning-post module, as is a slide-out 65-quart cooler, four rod holders, and storage lockers for fishing tackle.

The 281 XSS cradles the captain and co-pilot in a pair of posh bucket seats with flip-up bolsters and fold-down armrests. A handy footrest at the base of the center console lets you brace yourself on long runs while ensconced behind the three-sided, full-height acrylic windshield.

The helm is available with a pair of Garmin 10-inch displays providing access to digital switching for onboard -systems, as well as a chart plotter and sonar. There’s an additional switch panel in the intricately crafted hardtop that also includes four of the Fusion Stereo system’s six speakers.

Yet this hybrid does not live by fish alone, as evidenced by the inviting forward console lounge for two with a -reclining backrest and fold-down armrests, as well as a huge storage locker underneath. There’s also wraparound forward seating with backrests that create forward-facing lounges on each side.

The first in Scout’s new luxury crossover series of boats, the 350 LXZ delivers Scout’s robust construction with an exciting new side-console layout that’s packed with high-end amenities. It’s a boat equally at home entertaining a crowd as it is chasing fish.

What’s new about the 350 LXZ? By placing the helm console on the starboard side, Scout gives the boat a traditional walkaround feel, but with portside access to a bow lounge and a fantastic setup belowdecks. With the joystick control at the helm and the twin flush-mounted Garmin displays in the dash, the boat is easy to operate around the docks and underway. The twin displays show both navigation and sonar, plus all the ship’s systems and digital switching at the touch of a button.

The fully enclosed helm and passenger lounge area keep the captain and crew protected no matter the weather conditions, and the open bow lounge and aft cockpit seating keep the sun-worshippers happy in the fresh air. With a spacious and well-appointed cabin belowdecks, the 350 LXZ checks all the right boxes for an overnight trip.

To handle all the state-of-the art gear aboard the boat, such as the Lewmar anchor windlass, optional Seakeeper gyro, electric grill and air conditioning, the 350 LXZ employs a truly innovative lithium-ion battery system instead of a traditional genset. The lithium-ion battery bank can run all the features on the boat for a full day of boating before it needs to be recharged, which can be done via the alternators in under two hours. It also has shore power and solar panels. Plus, it’s quiet and doesn’t emit exhaust fumes.

The 350 LXZ features a double-stepped hull that gives it a great running attitude, and its sharp 24-degree transom deadrise helps it knife through rough seas. Scout reports that with the triple 400 hp Mercury package, this 10,000-pound boat is capable of speeds exceeding 65 mph, with cruising speeds in the 40s.

When you look at the profile of the 350 LXZ, you’ll note the beautiful lines that are classic Scout. But after stepping aboard, you’ll realize it’s clearly a boat for the future.

  • Lithium-ion power system replaces the traditional generator to provide quiet, safe, exhaust-free power all day long.
  • Bow lounge comfortably seats four people and, with its high freeboard and recessed grab rails, is safely secure.

2021 Scout 277 LXF https://www.boatingmag.com/story/boats/2021-scout-277-lxf/ Fri, 27 Aug 2021 17:00:00 +0000 https://www.boatingmag.com/?p=74592 The 277 LXF is an agile craft that meets the needs of hard-nosed anglers and boating families.

Overview

Within the 277 LXF, Scout engineers have balanced the needs of hard-driving offshore anglers with those more inclined to recline and enjoy a day cruise.

Interior and Accessories

On the fishy side, a livewell resides in the port quarter. Gunwale rod holders adorn the sides and transom, with another four in the deluxe leaning-post backrest, as well as five on the hardtop. A pair of insulated, in-sole fish boxes flank the aft cockpit. An inward-opening portside door lets you pull aboard big fish, and it will also find use as a boarding door.

A three-sided windshield surrounds the helm, and a pair of helm seats feature flip-up bolsters and armrests. Power steering and trim tabs are standard, as is a 9-inch Garmin 943xsv display, but you can upgrade to one 10-inch Garmin 8610xsv ($2,703), a 12-inch Garmin 8612xsv ($4,846) or two 10-inch Garmin 8610xsv displays ($8,206). A Yeti 65 cooler nestles under the workstation, and a 100-quart cooler is under the forward console seating.

Forward seating with removable backrests and storage underneath holds strong appeal to nonanglers. They’ll also like the retractable swim ladder on a full-width swim platform, the fold-down stern seating, and the convenience afforded by the self-contained porcelain head in the center console.

Scout 277 LXF idling
On the 277 LXF there’s a choice of three upgraded leaning-post modules. Courtesy Scout Boats

Notable options include upgraded upholstery-color packages, underwater lights, outriggers, and a removable teak bow table, as well as additional Garmin electronics, a high-zoot audio system, and a choice of three upgraded leaning-post modules.

Engines

Powered by twin Mercury 225 hp V-6 outboards, the 277 LXF proves fun to pilot. Our test boat popped on plane, and accelerated from zero to 30 mph in about 8 seconds. It achieved an exhilarating top speed of more than 58 mph.

Power steering offers agile handling, and Scout’s NuV3 variable-deadrise hull and 100 percent hand-laid construction result in one of the smoothest rides of any boat in this size category. The flaring bow garners admiring looks but, more importantly, it tosses seas aside to keep the interior dry.

Outriggers are just one of many options on the 277 LXF. Courtesy Scout Boats

How We Tested

  • Engine: Twin Mercury 225 hp V-6 FourStrokes
  • Drive/Prop: Outboard/Mercury Enertia 13.6″ x 21″ 3-blade stainless steel
  • Gear Ratio: 1.85:1 Fuel Load: 82 gal. Crew Weight: 380 lb.

High Points

  • Classic styling instills a deep pride of ownership.
  • Immaculate fit-and-finish and rigging throughout.
  • Cockpit offers plenty of room; transom door offers access to the swim platform.

Low Points

  • We’d like see a boarding-ladder option for the portside door.
  • Recessing or rounding off the bow rails would help prevent snagged fishing lines and cast nets.

Toughest Competitor

The Everglades 295cc ($335,388 base with twin Yamaha F300s) is about a foot longer and 9 inches wider, but its styling takes a harder edge, and the bow has far less flare. It too offers transom and side doors.

Overview

The Scout 215 Dorado adds flourishes to its classic lines—including a frameless, racy-looking wraparound acrylic windshield—that will turn heads anywhere this smooth-riding dual console carries you.

The 215 Dorado knifed smoothly through choppy seas. Courtesy Scout Boats

Engine

The F150 Yamaha outboard on our test boat propelled the 215 to plane in 3.5 seconds and 30 mph in 7.5 seconds. Top speed was a pleasing 43 mph at 5,700 rpm. Handling proved excellent. The 215 carved turns with confidence-inspiring precision. With 20 degrees of deadrise at the transom, it knifed smoothly through choppy seas. The feel was solid, with nary a rattle or creak. We’d like to see footrests for the helm and portside seats.

Interior and Accessories

An inviting bow area offers twin lounges and seating that envelopes guests. Set up the optional oval teak table for drinks and snacks.

Open the central windshield panel and stroll aft to find a cockpit deck spanning 7¼ feet wide by 7¾ feet long. Guests can fold down the transom bench seat to kick back. For the helm and port console, twin adjustable, swiveling bucket-style seats come standard. Back-to-back seating that becomes a lounger is an option for the port side.

Insert the optional ski pylon to retrieve your gear from the central insole ski locker, and turn up the Fusion four-speaker stereo.

There’s a telescoping, stainless-steel boarding ladder in the starboard swim platform. The head compartment in the port console offers privacy, and a portable marine toilet is optional, but a good idea.

For anglers, this boat has four gunwale rod holders, horizontal rod racks below the gunwales, and a 19.4-gallon covered livewell in the port quarter with a pump that serves the raw-water washdown system. A freshwater washdown is optional.

A black acrylic dash and matching countertops, along with a stainless-steel wheel, complement this boat’s classic yet racy look.

Note that the suggested retail pricing is listed here, but Scout informed us about a special discount program currently underway, so when shopping, ask about this Scout promotion.

How We Tested

  • Engine: Single Yamaha F150
  • Drive/Prop: Outboard/Reliance 14″ x 17″ stainless-steel 3-blade
  • Gear Ratio: 2.00:1 Fuel Load: 50 gal. Crew Weight: 400 lb.

High Points

  • Earns style points.
  • Self-bailing cockpit quickly drains water away from the nonskid deck.
  • Hydraulic steering ensures easy handling.

Low Points

  • Many saltwater anglers will want greater livewell capacity.
  • Footrests would be nice additions at the base of the consoles.

Toughest Competitor

Grady-White’s Freedom 215 ($84,790 with a Yamaha F200, portable head, Vista top and side curtains, trim tabs and hydraulic steering) is another versatile dual console with similar length and beam, 80-gallon fuel capacity, and abundant fishing features, including an optional 16-gallon livewell in lieu of the aft cooler.
