Nobody has a better handle on building high-performance pontoons complete with racecourse-ready style and durable construction than PlayCraft. Every model year, the company improves and refines its X-Treme series pontoons with outstanding luxury, speed and superior handling. The new PowerToon X-Treme 3010 emerges from that DNA.

The PowerToon X-Treme 3010 blends the extremes of luxury and high-speed performance. Gary Bogdon

Our recent test of the X-Treme 3010 on Lake of the Ozarks shattered old notions of pontoon boating before we even fired up the outboards. Designing a boat for speed mandates considering aerodynamics as well as hydrodynamics. A nod to aerodynamics appears in the wedge-shaped bow and the sleek Bimini top. Pontoon tubes are flat on top, foam-filled, sealed and pressurized, then bolted straight to the crossbeams of the 30-foot-by-8-foot-6-inch one-piece plywood deck for an unassailable, solid ride.

To further boost performance, the tubes widen aft, compressing air and spray, increasing lift, and giving more speed per horsepower. A wider, deeper center tube coupled with strategically placed lifting strakes give the boat comfortable turning and tons of passenger-carrying capacity. Dual Mercury Racing 450R outboards with tunable exhaust can give a chest-thumping, muscle-car rumble or a Lexus-like purr.

In the comfort department, furnishings on board from the deck to the shoulder cushions are upholstered in UV-protected vinyl. Color combinations are virtually unlimited, and owners can even match them to their favorite football team. Exterior colors are offered in a broad spectrum too. The 3010 has color-matched, powder-coated tubes and rails for durable good looks. The fiberglass-molded helm station is raised, giving a clear view above the crew. The captain’s chair swivels and reclines, and the armrests automatically adjust to the correct, comfortable angle.

Three boarding options include the wide bow deck, a wheel-chair-width port side gate and the stern platform. An extra-long boarding ladder integrated into the pontoon is patented and exclusive to PlayCraft. In its fourth generation of family boatbuilding, PlayCraft expertly blends the extremes of luxury and high-speed performance better than any other brand afloat.

Jim Dorris, founder of PlayCraft Boats, started the genre of super-fast pontoons back in the 1990s, and the Powertoon X-Treme 3000 is PlayCraft’s top of the line. It’s dual Mercury 450R powerplants boost the Powertoon X-Treme 3000 to a top speed of 77.8 mph at 6,450 rpm. It ripped to 30 mph in 3.5 seconds. With 900 horses on tap, the Powertoon is also poker-run-ready, delivering a range of 150 or more miles on a single fill-up.

While it’s a huge party platform, handling proves surprisingly agile for an 8.5-foot-wide 30-footer. It turns flat, predictably and smooth, with a clean arc and no banking. That’s due to PlayCraft’s lifting strakes that get the boat on top but hook into turns, helping the boat avoid that uncomfortable outward heeling of some performance pontoons. The center log is larger, adding buoyancy and contributing to its comfortable turning capabilities. For 2022, PlayCraft dropped the center tube 2 inches and toed in the outer logs 3 inches at the stern to help compress and pack air for added lift and speed. It worked and also reduced porpoising during high trim at high speed. The X-Treme 3000’s 30-foot length spans widely spaced rolling waves, so it’s stable even in Lake of the Ozarks’ holiday chop.

The interior layout is vast, plush and functional. Forward of the driver’s console, two exceptionally long facing lounges provide great seating for large groups. The driver’s console features a raised fiberglass platform for the captain’s chair. The helm is just as racy, with a full complement of instruments trimmed in matching purple bezels, and the captain gets a reclining high-back armchair, with inner springs and adjustable armrests to match the reclining angle.

A Mercury Racing 450R delivers exciting power and speed. It’s mounted to a Bob’s Machine Shop hydraulic jack plate for the ultimate precision in setting the ideal prop height for optimal speed and control. Jack-plate controls are on the steering column so adjustments are made without taking your eyes off the water to find them. A tilt helm, a full complement of red-bezel instruments, and a 5-inch -Simrad multifunction display and chart plotter complete the control station.

PlayCraft pontoons are constructed of 0.09-inch-thick aluminum, 24 inches wide, round on the bottom, and flat on the top. Sharp lifting strakes—chines, if you will—are welded to the side of each tube. Nose cones are fitted with skin guards and nose keels for durability, and to stop oil canning. Foam-filled tubes add noise deadening for safety. Under the deck, all-aluminum crossmembers bolt directly to the flat tube tops at 16 inches on center. Lifetime-guaranteed CCA seven-ply wood decking attaches to crossmembers with corrosion-resistant fasteners. Extruded side-deck bumpers and cast corner protectors are standard. An underdeck shield couples with lifting strakes on the pontoons to shed water and drag, improving acceleration and speed.

A Wet Sounds MC2 sound system, with four RGB-lit speakers and a remote, provides a backbeat to the party. The deck arrangement forms a spacious layout for parties, with plenty of lounge room for riding and relaxing. Twin sofas facing bow and stern hinged to roto-molded bases give comfortable gathering room, with plenty of storage underneath. Infinity woven-vinyl flooring is cool to the touch. Patented steps and a ladder are integrated for convenience.

The elevated captain’s high-back helm chair is deep and comfortable, with an optional reclining feature.

While this PlayCraft represents a midprice package at just under $120,000, it’s a full-zoot custom rig with enough power and speed to satisfy, and features and benefits to keep owners and fun-seekers occupied. Underneath, 0.09-inch-thick, 24-inch-diameter triple pontoons are fitted with skin guards on the nose keels for worry-free beaching. Foam flotation fills each pontoon for safety and noise deadening. Underdeck, all-aluminum cross members are fitted 16 inches on center and covered with aluminum spray-shield panels. Extruded side-deck bumpers and cast corner protectors are standard fare. CCA seven-ply wood decking that features a lifetime warranty is attached with corrosion-resistant fasteners.

A color-matched Bimini top is standard, as is a Wet Sounds stereo with four RGB-lit speakers and a remote. Infinity woven-vinyl flooring covers the deck. The furniture layout is spacious for parties yet still gives plenty of lounge room for riding and relaxing. Two bow and two stern sofas hinged to roto-cast bases also boast plenty of storage underneath. A removable snack table is also standard. Movable drink holders can be placed anywhere they’re convenient. The fiberglass pilot’s console features a Lexan windshield, tilt helm and full complement of instruments, along with an optional 5-inch Simrad multifunction/chart-plotter package. The captain’s helm chair is fit for a CEO, with adjustments for height and legroom, and it reclines and has movable armrests. Docking, courtesy and running lights are standard. On our test rig, RGB mood lighting was installed topside, along the rub rail and underwater. An optional wakeboard tower plus tow pylon were powder-coated in blue to complement the paint scheme.

The Verado power is exceptionally quiet, allowing for even-toned conversation at 40-plus mph speeds. It pulls like a freight train—zero to 30 mph in a cat-quick 5.1 seconds—and the straked pontoon tubes plane at a slow 14 mph and 2,200 rpm.

Jim Dorris, founder of PlayCraft pontoons, is also the founder of performance pontoon boating and the first to race them at the famous Lake of the Ozarks Shootout. Today, Jim, son Joe and grandkids maintain the decades-old legacy. PlayCraft’s creations are still at the top of this now-popular genre, posting record speeds at the LOTO Shootout. A 77.6 mph top speed, a 4-second hole shot to 30 mph, and racing graphics and colors demoralize all comers.

The PlayCraft’s most economical cruising speed gave the ship a 177-mile play between gas stops with its 50-gallon tank, with 10 gallons to spare.

The interior is plush as well as functional. Gary Bogdon

Handling was nimble for a big 10-foot beam, and the 30-footer seemed eager to make turns as tight as we were brave enough to command. All this is thanks to the tri-toon’s design, engineered for lift, speed and cornering with a 36-inch-wide center pod flanked by 26-by-24-inch outer pods, all equipped with lifting strakes to plane the boat and heel it inward on turns. And on Lake of the Ozarks’ famous washboard, the 30-foot length spans even the most persistent rollers, so rough-water comfort is quite good.

The PlayCraft’s rigging was all business, from the Bob’s Machine Shop hydraulic jack plates, to the Mercury Racing 450 hp engines with power steering and the lab-finished Bravo FS four-blade propellers.

Cruising and ripping aside, this -Powertoon’s really at home hosting friends and family. The lime-green, Audi-gray and jet-black color scheme really draws eyes; close-up inspection shows it’s well-done. The RGB rainbow mood lighting follows the sound beats, and is carried through the interior and overboard in the underdeck and underwater lights. The interior is plush as well as functional. Reboarding access combines a folding ladder with PlayCraft’s patented steps built into the center tube. The driver’s console features a full flight of instruments trimmed in matching lime-green bezels. As expected, the lounger space is huge.

PlayCraft’s legacy in performance pontooning is secure, and Dorris’ leadership is successfully grooming the company’s younger generations to enhance it.

PlayCraft’s rigs are unique, with performance and style that are unmistakable among other pontoons. That is naturally so because each PlayCraft is custom-built, styled and rigged to suit the owner.

High Points

  • Single-engine economy, with a top speed approaching nearly 55 mph.

Thirty years ago, PlayCraft Boats founder Jim Dorris looked at the popularity of go-fast boats on Lake of the Ozarks and asked: Why can’t we retain the leisure and social atmosphere of a pontoon boat while building it to power comfortably and easily accelerate to 70 mph? That idea is perfectly accomplished in the PowerToon X-Treme 3000.

The PlayCraft Powertoon X-Treme 3000 blends the extremes of luxury and high-speed performance Zach Stovall

Our recent test of the X-Treme 3000 on Lake of the Ozarks shatters old notions of pontoon boating before even firing the outboards. Designing a boat for speed mandates considering aerodynamics as well as hydrodynamics. A nod to aerodynamics appears in the wedge-shaped bow and the sleek Bimini top. One of the originators of pontoon-lifting strakes, PlayCraft employs them on three tubes to get on top of the water, reducing drag and increasing speed, all while retaining the soft ride of a pontoon.

Powered by dual Mercury Racing 400 outboards, our test boat popped us up on top and cruising at 30 mph in 5.2 seconds. Thanks to the electronic throttles and power steering, the triple-tube PowerToon banked comfortably into tight turns, held its line at speeds in excess of 40 mph and accomplished it effortlessly.

In the comfort department, furnishings on board are upholstered from the deck to the shoulder cushions in UV-protected vinyl. Color combinations are virtually unlimited and owners can even match them to their favorite football teams. Exterior colors are offered in a broad spectrum too. Color-matched, powder-coated tubes and rails make for durable good looks.

The fiberglass-molded helm station is raised, giving a clear view above the crew. The captain’s chair swivels and reclines; the arm rests automatically adjust to the correct, comfortable angle.

Three boarding options include the wide bow deck, a wheelchair-width portside gate and the stern platform. An extra-long boarding ladder integrated into the pontoon is patented and exclusive to PlayCraft.

Blending the extremes of luxury and high-speed performance in many pontoons often result in little satisfaction in luxury or performance.

Yet PlayCraft nailed it with the PowerToon X-Treme 3000. Again.

High Points

⋅The color-matched cushion-topped cooler is a standard PlayCraft feature.

⋅PlayCraft’s patented boarding steps, built into the tube with an extension ladder, reach deep for easy boarding.

⋅Two moveable cupholders are standard.
