Ebbtide’s Z-Trak hull design boasts twin vented chines. These are intended to allow water to escape while attaining plane, resulting in a quicker hole shot and less bow rise. After our day on the lake aboard Ebbtide’s 2460 DC Fun Cruiser, we can say that this boat planed fast and came up flat: We never lost visibility forward. Structurally, this hull is laminated with hand-laid, knitted fabrics, Kevlar, and high-tech coring materials for sound deadening, stiffness and a high strength-to-weight ratio.

With MerCruiser’s 300 hp 350 Mag Bravo Three sterndrive under the hatch, the 2460 DC delivered a confident feel, responding nimbly and quickly to input at the wheel and throttle. Crossing boat wakes at increasingly higher speeds revealed the ability to handle choppy water and served as a testament to solid construction and assembly: This boat just doesn’t rattle. While aboard, take note of the details that experienced boaters will applaud, such as hatches with deep gutters so gear stays dry; a solid, stainless-steel latch to prevent the windshield from inadvertently slamming closed; standard amidships cleats; and boarding ladders (fore and aft), each with enough steps to be functional.

Of course there’s more than technology and toughness to the 2460 DC. One need only count the four coolers Ebbtide incorporated into this big, fine-riding deck boat to prove that. We also found our jaded selves oohing and aahing at the extra long, extra tall and extra wide Bimini top that Ebbtide fits aboard the 2460 DC. Too many tops make roomy boats feel cramped. In the enclosed head we discovered a spacious area that guests will feel comfortable in utilizing. Access is great due to the unique forward entry hatch. Ebbtide offers an optional vacuum-flush system with pump-out capability. Entertain using the convenience center with its sink, cooler and trash container.

Ebbtide ensured stowage space was built in aboard the 2460 DC. There are large compartments beneath both the forward and aft seating, as well as a ski locker in the fiberglass cockpit sole, a glove box and more.

Buyer’s Spotlight
*Wider, longer and taller, the oversize Bimini top is awesome.
*Z-Trak hull proved fast, planed flat and exhibited no quirks: It’s a winner.
*Standard spring line cleats, dual boarding ladders and an extra-sturdy latching windshield are just some of the niceties we admired.

Wood-cored stringers, a balsa-cored engine compartment and foam injected between liner and hull made Ebbtide’s 2300 one of the quietest runabouts I’ve tested. With a peak db(a) reading of 90 and readings at cruising rpm in the mid-80s, the meter proves this new bowrider is 20 percent quieter than most others, many of which use fiberglass stringers, which lack the sound-attenuating qualities of wood.

Does wood rot? Sure. Unless, like Ebbtide, you seal the end grain and any fastener penetration where equipment is mounted, and you have experienced, long-term employees hand-laminate the encapsulating fiberglass. Remember: How the job’s done is just as important as the materials used to do it.

I discovered that attention to detail aboard the 2300 goes beyond construction. Caressing a seat, I detected a suppleness that prompted a query. Turns out the upholstery is built to specifications with stuff called SRT (stain-resistant coating) and that supple feel, or “hand,” is unique in the stain-resistant-vinyl business. A feature you can feel just by sitting down is the high-density foam used to provide comfort, and you don’t bottom out when the water’s choppy. I saw through-bolts securing all grab rails, as well as hinges on hatches such as the enormous ski locker, and the equipment access in the engine compartment rates top-notch.

My tester boasted the racy Sport interior, with a checkered flag emblazoning the sun pad and open-back buckets at the helm. A more conservative SL interior is also offered. Its aft bench seats four, and its starboard side lifts, creating a walkway to the platform. This hinged section also can be propped at an angle, making the sun pad a recliner.

The 2300’s Z-Trak hull is a vented chine design with a keel pad that reduces wetted surface without producing the handling glitches some fully stepped hulls exhibit. With the 300 hp Mercruiser 350 Magnum redlined and the alpha drive trimmed to the limit, I hit 54 mph. Hard turns were crisp, wake jump re-entries soft and acceleration exhilarating. And all of it, oh, so quiet.

With or without the tinted windshield, the 2240 SS is a looker. More than that, it’s a runner. Ebbtide builds the boat on its own Z-Trak hull that uses double-vented chines to do exactly what vents are supposed to do: invite air inside. In this case, that means more of the hull can breathe at two points on each side, thereby lessening drag. Our tests with Ebbtide models consistently showcase this quality, with speeds that beat most of the competition by a few clicks on the speedometer.

Ebbtide’s midsize deck boat features full-size features like a head compartment and a full swim platform. A portside entry hatch plus a walk-through transom give two easy boarding options. Performance? Ebbtide specializes in agility and speed. Equip it with a Volvo Penta 6.0-liter stern-drive and duo-prop, and we’d expect this rig to exceed 50 mph and offer a slow planning speed in the teens to make wakeboarders happy.

It’s nice to be on the water knowing you’re prepared for anything: The bow locker is packed with toys; there are beverages icing in the cooler; and the stereo is set to “stun.” Many deckboats satisfy this mission but lack the one element needed to make it complete – a place to stow the fishing rods. A notable exception is the Ebbtide Mystique 2400 Fun Cruiser DC. Its dedicated stowage area in the starboard gunwale accommodates two fishing rods. It’s one example of the smart thinking that went into making the 2400.

Need another? How about stainless-steel grab handles that extend forward along the entire bow seating area? On a boat designed to hold up to 12 people, these guarantee everyone will have something to hold onto when cruising in a chop. Other decks, such as the Rinker 243 Siesta ($30,695 with a 220-hp MerCruiser stern drive), have grabrails that run forward, too. But Ebbtide goes one step farther by putting rails on the 2400’s bow swim platform as well. We wish more builders would do this.

Another similarity the 2400 shares with the 243 Siesta is a protected cockpit. Both sport walkthrough windshields that make cruising more pleasant. Ebbtide outfits the 2400 with a fiberglass walkway door for wind protection, which works better than the curtain on the 243 Siesta. The 2400’s foam coring deadens sound and vibration while adding flotation. Ebbtide builds the 2400 with a grid stringer system made from encapsulated rot-resistant XL plywood. The hull bottom is balsa cored; the deck is a combination of high-density Divinycel foam and balsa coring; and the sides have sprayed-on foam core. On the water, the 2400 performs ably, reaching a top end of 46.6 mph and a cruising speed of 32.6 mph. The 2400’s hull offers 16 degrees of deadrise, typical for a deckboat. It pounds a bit over big wakes but rides nicely in light chop.

There are a couple of nitpicks. The hatch for the bow sole locker takes up so much room that you can’t stand while opening it – you have to sit on the lounge with your feet up. The other is that the enclosed head is carpeted. Ebbtide isn’t the only boat company to put carpet here, but it’s sure to mildew and we’d rather not see it at all. Otherwise, the 2400’s ready for whatever you are.

LAST WORD. A boat that’s equipped to do it all – even fish.
